This week, African foreign ministers will gather in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, to discuss critical issues impacting the continent’s future. Among these discussions, the upcoming African Union Commission (AUC) elections will take center stage. As the continent faces unprecedented challenges, the need for a transformative leader with a clear, innovative vision has never been more urgent.
Current candidates, though experienced, seem to lack the dynamic and forward-thinking approach required to tackle Africa’s evolving problems. Therefore, it is crucial for our leaders to consider a fresh and innovative candidate: Mr. January Yusuf Makamba, Tanzania’s Foreign Minister.
The African Union (AU) stands at a pivotal moment in history. Global dynamics are changing rapidly, and Africa requires a leader who understands these shifts and can navigate them effectively.
The recent endorsement of Mr. Makamba by the Archbishop Tutu Leadership Fellows and African Young Global Leaders of the World Economic Forum highlights the pressing need for leadership that can reinvigorate the AU’s institutions with energy and credibility. The erosion of capacity, credibility, and efficacy within our institutions is a concern that cannot be ignored.

Mr. Makamba’s extensive and varied political career makes him an ideal candidate. Over the past 20 years, he has held significant roles, including senior aide to former President Jakaya Kikwete, Member of Parliament, and Minister in portfolios such as Science and Technology, Environment, Energy, and currently, Foreign Affairs. His experience in these diverse fields has provided him with a comprehensive understanding of both national and international politics.
At 50 years old, Makamba strikes a balance between youthful vigor and seasoned experience, crucial for engaging Africa’s predominantly young population. His leadership has gained global recognition; he was named a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum and is a Fellow of the Archbishop Desmond Tutu Leadership Fellowship. These honors attest to his potential to bring new energy, dynamism, and creativity to the AU Commission.
During his tenure as Tanzania’s Minister of Environment, Makamba spearheaded significant initiatives addressing climate change and sustainable development. He implemented policies aimed at reducing carbon emissions and promoting renewable energy sources. Under his leadership, Tanzania launched several reforestation projects and developed sustainable agricultural practices that helped mitigate the effects of climate change.
For instance, his efforts led to the establishment of the Tanzania Climate Smart Agriculture Programme, which increased agricultural productivity while reducing greenhouse gas emissions. These initiatives advanced environmental sustainability and improved the livelihoods of local communities by promoting sustainable farming methods.

As Minister of Energy, Makamba championed policies to ensure energy security and sustainability, critical for Africa’s development. He promoted the diversification of energy sources, including the development of hydroelectric, solar, and wind power projects. Notably, Makamba played a key role in implementing the Julius Nyerere Hydropower Project, expected to generate 2,115 megawatts, significantly boosting Tanzania’s electricity capacity.
His focus on renewable energy was not just about meeting current energy demands but also about future-proofing Tanzania’s energy infrastructure against the volatility of global fossil fuel markets. By advocating for a mix of traditional and renewable energy sources, Makamba ensured a balanced approach to energy security, making strides towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goal 7: Affordable and Clean Energy.
The AU Commission needs a leader who can inspire and mobilize the continent’s youth, foster unity, and drive forward the AU’s agenda with innovative solutions. Africa’s youth population, projected to reach 830 million by 2050, is a vital asset for the continent’s future. Makamba’s experience and youthful vigor position him well to engage and inspire this demographic.
His track record includes initiatives that empower young people through education, entrepreneurship, and technology. For instance, he has supported programs that enhance digital literacy and foster innovation among young Tanzanians, recognizing the importance of technology in driving economic growth and social development.
Furthermore, the appeal from the Tutu Fellows and Young Global Leaders highlights that Makamba’s passion and commitment to Africa are well-known and respected. His ability to eloquently advocate for Africa on the global stage ensures that Africans will feel proud to have him represent their interests internationally.

Statistics support Makamba’s influence, with Tanzania showing improvements in various sectors under his policies. His initiatives have significantly boosted investments and implementation of renewable energy projects. His leadership in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has strengthened Tanzania’s diplomatic ties and enhanced its standing in regional and international forums.
Africa is at a crossroads, and the choice of leadership will significantly impact its path forward. I urge African foreign ministers to consider Makamba’s candidacy seriously. His track record, vision, and youthful energy position him as the ideal leader to steer the AU towards a prosperous future.
