This year’s World Athlete of the Year awards in Monaco celebrated the outstanding achievements of Botswana’s Letsile Tebogo and Sifan Hassan, who secured the top prizes in their respective categories. Letsile Tebogo made history by becoming Botswana’s first Olympic champion at the Paris Games, where he set a new record in the men’s 200 meters.

The 21-year-old athlete expressed his gratitude as he was named the male world athlete of the year. “It feels amazing. It feels good to know that what you have been putting in throughout the year is now giving you some of the fruits that you have been waiting for,” Tebogo said during his acceptance speech.

Sifan Hassan, another remarkable athlete from Dutch, received the female world athlete of the year award. Hassan, who clinched her first global marathon title at the Paris Olympics, was also a champion at the London Marathon the previous year. Her achievements this year have solidified her status as one of the leading athletes in long-distance running.

In her acceptance speech, Hassan thanked her supporters and acknowledged the tough competition she faced. “Thanks to the fans and everybody who voted. I never thought I’m going to win this one because it was like this year, crazy. It’s not only me. All the athletes are amazing,” she said, reflecting on the challenging year and the strength of her fellow competitors.

The awards ceremony also included a moment of reflection and remembrance for Kelvin Kiptum, who was honored at last year’s event. Kiptum tragically passed away in a road accident earlier this year. The audience held a moment’s silence in his memory, paying tribute to his contributions to the sport.
