The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has called for blood donation following the attack on a church in Owo, Ondo State, Nigeria as it also asked the governments and security agencies to do better in the protection of lives and properties.

This call was contained in a statement issued by the NMA President Dr Uche Ojinmah after attackers killed scores of persons and injured many others at the St Francis Catholic Church in Owo, the headquarters of Owo Local Government Area.

The death toll from the massacre of worshipers at the St. Francis Catholic Church in Owaluwa on Sunday has risen to over 100, with some of the critically injured victims reportedly dying while being treated in various hospitals.

On the condition of anonymity because he does not have the authority to speak to the media, a medical officer at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) revealed this on Monday morning.

“I can confirm that so far, the death toll has risen to well over 100. Many of the injured victims died while receiving treatment as we ran out of blood to infuse into them,” he said.

The medical officer added that the FMC and other hospitals were in urgent need of blood donation as the emergency units of the hospitals had run out of blood.

“On Sunday, a total of 35 persons were brought in dead at the Federal Medical Centre and Saint Louis Hospital, while many injured victims were taken to other hospitals in the town and as far as Akure, the state capital.

“Many of the victims died because there was no blood to administer to them,” he added.

Scores of worshippers, including women and children, were shot down by the gunmen who invaded the church located in the heart of the town and opened fire on them as they were leaving the church at the end of the morning mass.

President Muhammadu Buhari has condemned the heinous killing of worshippers in Ondo state. The President, in a condolence message released by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr Femi Adesina, said only wicked and devilish people could have conceived and carried out such a dastardly act.

According to him, eternal sorrow awaits them both on earth here, and ultimately in the hereafter.

AEM had reported that, at the end of the shooting, not less than 80 people were killed while an unspecified number were critically injured.
