The Democratic Republic of Congo’s parliament has unanimously voted to extend the state of emergency in North Kivu and Ituri, two eastern provinces filled with insecurity.
That means that the two eastern provinces will still be under military rule.
With the development, the state of emergency previously imposed by President Félix Tshisekedi on May 6 has been elongated six times now.
With the parliament hosting 335 members of parliament, 334 voted in favor while one voted against the extension.
Currently, military administrations have been substituted with civilian authorities to counter insecurity in the two provinces that have witnessed ambushes by rebels, leaving thousands dead.
Despite the United Nations deploying thousands of peacekeepers, violence has been on the rise.
A fraction of the attacks has been linked to the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) – an armed group among the many operating in Congo.
The two provinces have also witnessed ethnic clashes that have worsened the already bad situation.
