FC Barcelona defender Dani Alves has confirmed that he will not continue at the Camp Nou Stadium next season after the club opted against taking up the option of another year on his contract.

The Brazilian returned to Barcelona in January on a free transfer and it had looked for a while as though he would continue but the veteran has now confirmed his time is up.

Dani Alves had wanted to stay on for at least another six months in order to prepare for the 2022 World Cup in November. ButBarcelona have rejected his request, despite the veteran being arguably the club’s best right-back during the 2021-22 season.

Alves, who has won well over 100 international caps for Brazil, played 16 games in all competitions last season as Barcelona finished second in LaLiga, 13 points behind champions Real Madrid.

He was brought in by Barca coach Xavi Hernandez, his former teammate, in a bid to rescue a team languishing ninth in the LaLiga standings. Alves, who played for Juventus, Paris St Germain and Sao Paulo after leaving Barcelona the first time, agreed to keep his salary to a minimum, helping the club avoid breaching Financial Fair Play rules.
