Dikembe Mutombo Foundation, founder of his own foundation which had immense impact on the lives of many especially the poor and needy, today scummed to Brain cancer after battling it for a few years. He is survived by his wife Rose and 3 children who live in Atlanta, Georgia.

He came to the US from Kinshasa, the Democratic Republic of Congo at the age of 21 years to study medicine at Georgetown University. His towering height of 7.2 foot did not escape the basketball coach who got him to play the game and the rest is history.

He graduated from Georgetown with dual degrees in Linguistics and Diplomacy. Mutombo was fluent in nine languages, including five African languages.

Mr. Mutombo played 18 seasons in the National Basketball Association (NBA). Nicknamed “Mount Mutombo” for his defensive prowess, he is commonly regarded as one of the best shot-blockers and defensive players of all time.

He was a rare breed of a man, qualities such as selflessness, loving others as himself, not forgetting where he came from, a some of the reasons as to why former American president George W Bush described him as a world model citizen.

And we’re proud to call the son of the Congo a citizen of the United States of America – President George W Bush.

He turned to Humanitarian work and among the many things he did to improve people’s lives was opening the Biamba Marie Mutombo Hospital in Congo at a cost of $29 million, named after his mother in 2007.
