Ethiopia is on the verge of achieving nearly 100% renewable electricity generation, positioning itself as a leader in Africa’s clean energy transition. Minister of Planning and Development, Fitsum Assefa Adela, highlighted Ethiopia’s commitment to renewable energy, water conservation, and green infrastructure as key drivers of this progress.

The country’s electricity supply is predominantly sourced from hydropower, with additional contributions from wind, solar, and geothermal energy. Ethiopia’s government has implemented extensive initiatives to expand electrification, particularly in rural areas, by investing in solar and wind energy projects, as well as solar-powered irrigation systems.

A report from the International Trade Administration (ITA) states that approximately 90% of Ethiopia’s installed electricity capacity comes from hydropower, while wind and thermal sources contribute 8% and 2%, respectively. The ITA further notes that Ethiopia has the potential to generate over 60,000 megawatts (MW) of electricity from its renewable resources.

This energy strategy significantly reduces Ethiopia’s dependence on imported fossil fuels, shielding the country from global energy price fluctuations. It also ensures stable electricity costs, benefiting consumers, businesses, and industries. However, despite having an installed generation capacity of 5,200 MW, Ethiopia’s power supply currently reaches less than 60% of its population.

As energy demand continues to grow, Ethiopia’s vast renewable potential offers a long-term solution for meeting future electricity needs. The country’s push for renewable energy also plays a crucial role in combating climate change by drastically cutting greenhouse gas emissions. Unlike fossil fuels, renewable energy sources do not produce CO2, making Ethiopia one of the least polluting nations in terms of electricity generation.

With continued investment and expansion in its renewable energy sector, Ethiopia is setting a benchmark for sustainable energy development in Africa, reinforcing its commitment to environmental conservation and economic growth through clean energy solutions.
