Iran has dismissed French President Emmanuel Macron’s assertion that it poses the “main strategic and security challenge” in the Middle East, labeling the remarks “baseless and deceitful.” Iranian foreign ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei condemned Macron’s statements as “contradictory and speculative,” urging France to reconsider its “non-constructive approaches” to peace and stability.
Macron’s comments, made during a Monday speech, emphasized that Iran’s nuclear activities are accelerating tensions. He stated that Iran’s nuclear program is “bringing us very close to the breaking point” and remains a critical issue for France, Europe, and the broader region. Macron also noted that Iran would be a key topic in discussions with the incoming U.S. administration under President-elect Donald Trump.
In response, Baqaei reiterated that Iran’s nuclear activities are “peaceful and within the framework of international laws.” Tehran has consistently denied pursuing atomic weapons, despite enriching uranium to 60%, a level nearing the 90% threshold required for nuclear arms.
Tensions surrounding Iran’s nuclear program have escalated since the U.S. withdrew from the 2015 nuclear deal under Trump’s presidency. The agreement, which provided sanctions relief in exchange for curbs on Iran’s nuclear ambitions, had been adhered to by Tehran until Washington’s withdrawal. In response, Iran began scaling back its commitments under the deal.
Upcoming nuclear talks are scheduled for January 13 in Switzerland, involving Iran, France, Britain, and Germany. These discussions aim to address the nuclear program’s progress and ease regional concerns.
Macron Criticized for Remarks on African Leaders
Macron’s remarks about Iran come amid criticism from African leaders over his recent comments labeling some nations “ungrateful” despite French support. Leaders across the continent, including those from Senegal and Chad, have rebuffed these statements, highlighting the need for respectful partnerships. They assert that Africa had sought equitable cooperation, not paternalistic rhetoric.
By coupling his critiques of Iran with controversial statements on African nations, Macron faces growing backlash for his approach to global relations. Critics argue that fostering meaningful dialogue and mutual respect is crucial for navigating these security and diplomatic challenges.
