What is the true nature of reality in a world increasingly shaped by social media? This is the provocative question that #WeWatchKenyan with MyMovies.Africa will explore during its sixth Watch Party of the year.
Scheduled for Saturday, 07 September 2024, the event will take place at OUT Reality, The Mall (basement) in Westlands, Nairobi. The evening will commence at 06:00 PM with a screening of two compelling short comedies: INFLUENCED and TEKA. The screening starts at 07:00 PM, followed by a Question & Answer session with the cast and crew from 08:00 PM to 09:30 PM.
#WeWatchKenyan, an initiative by YAKWETU, is a monthly Watch Party dedicated to promoting local films and fostering a community of Kenyan creatives who actively engage with Kenyan content. This month’s event focuses on the impact of social media on our perceptions of reality, as showcased through the featured films:
- INFLUENCED: This short comedy delves into the glamorous yet fragile world of Ben (George Waweru) and Kay (Ciku Waithaka), a popular influencer couple. Their seemingly perfect life starts to unravel during a pivotal photo shoot, exposing the emotional turmoil behind their curated public personas.
- TEKA: This gripping film follows Amani (Nick Olwah), who, facing a crippling debt crisis, decides to kidnap a social media influencer named Hope (Amina Hussein). Their intense encounter unfolds into a story of vulnerability and unexpected connections, leaving viewers on the edge of their seats.
Nkatha, host of the TALK FILM TO ME Podcast, will moderate the event. “As a social media strategist and film critic, I am thrilled to delve into these films and discuss their perspectives on social media with our audience,” she notes.
Mr. Mike Strano, Co-Founder and Chief Operations Officer of YAKWETU, adds, “This month’s #WeWatchKenyan event brings a blend of comedy and dramedy. We’re excited to have stand-up comedians, who also write and produce, share their insights and success stories with our attendees.”
The event will feature:
- Ciku Waithaka – Writer and Actress of INFLUENCED.
- Samuel Oduor – Writer, Director, and Producer of TEKA.
- Adams Eston – Assistant Producer of TEKA.
- Nick Olwah – Actor in TEKA.
