Manchester United beat Aston Villa 4-2 in the third round of the Carabao Cup, twice rallying from a goal down to emerge victorious at Old Trafford. The game immediately exploded into life in the second half after a dull and lackluster first half.

Ollie Watkins scored in the 48th minute, but Anthony Martial leveled the game a minute later. Villa regained the lead in the 61st minute through an own goal by Diogo Dalot off a header from Leon Bailey.

But that lead would last only six minutes before United equalized again, this time through Marcus Rashford. Erik ten Hag’s side ran away with the game in the final minutes, with Bruno Fernandes and Scott McTominay scoring to secure United’s place in the Carabao Cup’s last 16.

The result saw United exact some revenge for Sunday’s 3-1 Premier League loss in Villa manager Unai Emery’s first game in charge. It also boosts Ten Hag’s chances of winning a trophy in his first season at United, with Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham having all been eliminated on Wednesday.

In the next round, defending champion Liverpool and Manchester City were drawn against each other. Manchester United will host Burnley, while Newcastle will host fellow Premier League side Bournemouth.
