On Thursday, King Mohammed VI of Morocco officially launched the construction of the Kenitra-Marrakech high-speed rail (HSR) line, marking a significant milestone in the nation’s infrastructure development. This 430-kilometer corridor aims to connect key cities, Rabat, Casablanca, and Marrakech, enhancing mobility and economic integration across the region.

The Kenitra-Marrakech HSR line is a central component of Morocco’s ambitious $10.3 billion rail expansion plan, which includes the acquisition of 168 new trains and the development of metropolitan transit systems in major cities.  Designed for speeds up to 350 km/h, the new line will significantly reduce travel times, cutting the journey from Tangier to Marrakech to approximately 2 hours and 40 minutes. Additionally, it will enable rapid access from Rabat to Casablanca’s Mohammed V International Airport in just 35 minutes.

This project is not only about speed but also about sustainability and economic growth. By alleviating congestion on traditional railways, it will free up capacity for regional and suburban commuter services, particularly benefiting urban centers like Casablanca, where traffic congestion and air pollution are pressing concerns.

Morocco’s investment in high-speed rail is a strategic move to bolster national competitiveness. The country plans to develop a domestic industrial ecosystem with significant local content, targeting over 40% local integration for new train manufacturing. This initiative is expected to create thousands of direct and indirect jobs and provide technical training to build a specialized Moroccan workforce in advanced rail systems.

International companies are playing a vital role in this endeavor. France’s Alstom will supply Avelia Horizon double-decker high-speed trains, Spain’s CAF will provide intercity rolling stock, and South Korea’s Hyundai Rotem will deliver commuter trains. These partnerships are supported by favorable financing packages, facilitating the project’s progress.

Morocco’s infrastructure investments over the past two decades have transformed the country into a logistics and transportation hub in North Africa. From the world-class Tanger Med port to expanding airport capacity and an ambitious road network, connectivity has been at the heart of its economic strategy. The expansion of the HSR network aligns with Morocco’s green commitments and its ambition to lead Africa in climate-resilient infrastructure.

The Kenitra-Marrakech HSR line is also part of Morocco’s preparations for co-hosting the 2030 FIFA World Cup with Spain and Portugal. The enhanced rail connectivity will facilitate efficient transportation for fans and teams between host cities, showcasing Morocco’s readiness for global events.

Morocco’s high-speed rail success is garnering attention across Africa. Several countries, particularly in West Africa, have expressed interest in replicating the model. The national railway operator, ONCF, has taken on an advisory role in multiple regional rail initiatives, offering Moroccan expertise as a blueprint for large-scale transport projects on the continent.

Beyond infrastructure, Morocco’s railway ambitions reflect a broader economic vision: investing in modern infrastructure, developing competitive industries, and exporting capabilities. The rail sector, with its unique blend of mobility, manufacturing, and logistics, is emerging as a key pillar of this new economic diplomacy.

The launch of the Kenitra–Marrakech high-speed rail line signifies Morocco’s commitment to sustainable development, economic growth, and regional integration. As the country continues to invest in cutting-edge infrastructure, it sets a precedent for innovation and progress across the African continent.
