Mozambique was thrown into turmoil on Thursday as Venancio Mondlane, the main opposition leader, returned to the country from a self-imposed exile and defiantly claimed he won the October presidential polls. His dramatic return was marked by clashes between his supporters and police in the capital city, Maputo.

Mondlane, arrived at Maputo International Airport to a large crowd of enthusiastic supporters. The atmosphere was charged with anticipation and excitement as people gathered to welcome him back. Chanting slogans and waving flags, the supporters expressed their unwavering loyalty to Mondlane and their hope for political change.

In a bold move, Mondlane addressed the crowd shortly after his arrival, declaring himself the legitimate president of Mozambique.

“I, Venancio Mondlane, (am the) president elected by the Mozambicans,” he said at the terminal, holding a Bible.

“Not by the Constitutional Council, not by the national commission of elections, but by the genuine will of the people.”

He accused the current government of corruption, mismanagement, and failing to address the needs of the people. Mondlane’s speech was met with loud cheers and applause from his supporters, who see him as a beacon of hope for a better future.

However, the situation quickly escalated as police attempted to disperse the crowd. Clashes broke out between Mondlane’s supporters and the police, resulting in several injuries and arrests. Tear gas was used to control the situation, and there were reports of property damage in the surrounding areas.

The government, led by President Filipe Nyusi, has condemned Mondlane’s actions, calling them illegal and a threat to national stability. In a statement, the government reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining law and order and warned that any attempts to undermine the democratic process would be dealt with severely.

Mondlane’s return and self-declaration as president have sparked a heated debate among political analysts and the general public. Some view his actions as a courageous stand against a corrupt regime, while others see it as a reckless move that could destabilize the country further.

Mondlane’s political journey has been marked by controversy and resilience. As a prominent opposition figure, he has been a vocal critic of the government and has faced numerous challenges, including threats to his life. His decision to go into exile was driven by concerns for his safety and the need to continue his political activities without fear of persecution.

Concerns had earlier arose that Mondlane might face arrest upon his return, including charges tied to weeks of protests by his predominantly young supporters seeking change after 50 years under Frelimo rule.

Frelimo, in power since Mozambique’s independence from Portuguese colonial rule in 1975, denies opposition claims of electoral fraud. Western observers, however, criticized this year’s election as neither free nor fair.

Mondlane’s return after two months in exile has inspired hope among his supporters. “We young people are here fighting for our tomorrow,” said Fatima Pinto, 20, a trained medical technician.
