Niger is advancing its decolonization efforts by renaming streets and monuments in the capital, Niamey, to honor national heroes instead of colonial figures. The renaming ceremony, led by Colonel Boubacar Suman Garanke, head of the Niamey administration, took place on Sunday, marking another step in the country’s campaign to reclaim its narrative.
Colonel Boubacar highlighted that the changes were made under the directive of President Abdourahamane Tiani, leader of the National Council for the Safeguard of the Homeland (CNSP). “Today, we’ve renamed four avenues and a square, replacing colonial names with those of our national heroes,” he announced.

The renamed landmarks include:
–Avenue François Mitterrand, previously named after a former French president, now Avenue Boubou Hama.
–Avenue Jules Brevier, formerly honoring a French Minister of Colonial Affairs, now Avenue Dan Koulodo.
-The intersection of Libyan and French embassy streets, now Zancen Kassa Square.
–Avenue of President Karl Casten, now Avenue Morou Karma.
This is not the first renaming initiative in Niamey. In October 2024, several French-sounding landmarks were altered as anti-French sentiment surged across Niger and other former colonies.

A Break From Colonial Influence
Niger’s relationship with France has shifted dramatically over the years. Once a French colony, Niger resisted colonial conquest, which began in 1899, and only fell under civilian rule in 1922 after significant resistance. However, the country has since worked to sever ties with French influence, particularly following the coup of July 2023.
The coup marked a turning point, with Niger pushing out French troops, closing the French embassy, and declaring an end to foreign military dependence. The government also announced plans to rewrite its colonial history, aiming to present it through Niger’s perspective and highlight the struggles and resilience of its people.
These renaming efforts symbolize Niger’s biggest ambition to reclaim its identity and assert sovereignty while inspiring its citizens to honor local heroes who embody the nation’s resilience and aspirations.
