Speaking at the VTB RUSSIA CALLING! Investment Forum in Moscow, Russian President Vladimir Putin emphasized what he described as a deep spiritual bond between Russia and Africa. Putin linked this connection to the shared value of sovereignty, highlighting both regions’ commitment to self-determination and freedom from external influence.

“Africa may geographically seem like a rather distant continent, but it is spiritually close to us,” Putin remarked. “They value their sovereignty and make decisions in the interests of their peoples and countries. We believe they will continue to do so.”

Putin praised Africa’s bravery and its history of resistance, comparing it to Russia’s own struggles to assert independence on the global stage. He further noted Africa’s status as a “reliable partner,” underscoring the continent’s growing role in global economic and political frameworks.

The Russian president pointed to Africa’s vast development potential, calling it one of the most dynamic regions in the world. He cited reports from both Russian and Western experts affirming the continent’s rapid economic growth. “The African continent has very good development prospects. Global experts, including Western ones, acknowledge this,” Putin said, adding that countries like Ethiopia have demonstrated exceptional growth, with an estimated 120% rise in their economies over the past decade.

Putin also used the forum to reaffirm Russia’s commitment to building partnerships in Africa that are immune to external pressures. “We focus on projects that align with mutual interests and do not respond to shouts from external parties,” he stated.

SENEGAL’S CALL FOR SOVEREIGNTY

Putin’s remarks on sovereignty come amid rising calls from African nations to assert greater control over their affairs. In Senegal, President Diomaye Faye recently demanded the withdrawal of French troops, citing a desire to end decades of reliance on foreign military presence. Faye argued that true sovereignty requires freedom from foreign domination in all spheres, including security.

This sentiment resonates across West Africa, where anti-French sentiment has grown, particularly in nations like Niger and Mali, which have also pushed for French troop departures. Observers see Russia as a potential ally in this shift, offering African nations an alternative to traditional Western partnerships.

This year, the event’s theme, “The Future of Capital and the Capital of the Future,” reflects its focus on fostering collaboration with nations like those in Africa that prioritize sovereignty and shared growth.
