Brazilian and Real Madrid legend Marcelo has officially retired from football at the age of 36, marking the end of an illustrious 19-year career. The left-back made the announcement on Instagram on Thursday through a heartfelt video showcasing key moments of his career.

“My journey as a player ends here, but I still have so much to give to football,” Marcelo said in the video.

Marcelo’s career was defined by success, particularly during his 16-season spell at Real Madrid, where he won 25 major titles. These included five Champions League trophies, six La Liga titles, two Copa del Rey crowns, five Spanish Super Cups, four Club World Cups, and three European Super Cups.

He played a crucial role in Madrid’s dominance, including their historic three consecutive Champions League victories from 2016 to 2018.

“At 18, Real Madrid came knocking, and I arrived. I can proudly say I’m a true ‘Madrileno,’” Marcelo reflected.

Recognized as one of the greatest left-backs in football history, Marcelo was known for his attacking prowess, technical skills, and leadership. Towards the end of his Madrid tenure, he captained the team, guiding them to their 2022 Champions League triumph over Liverpool.

Real Madrid president Florentino Perez paid tribute to Marcelo, saying, “He is one of our greatest legends, and Real Madrid is and always will be his home.

Marcelo also had an impactful international career, earning 58 caps for Brazil. He represented his country in two World Cups and won the Confederations Cup in 2013. He also secured a silver medal at the 2012 Olympics and a bronze in 2008.

After leaving Madrid in 2022, Marcelo had a brief spell with Greek club Olympiacos before returning to his boyhood club, Fluminense, in Brazil. His homecoming proved successful, as he helped the team win the Copa Libertadores in 2023. However, his time there ended in November 2024 following a reported dispute with head coach Mano Menezes during a match against Gremio.
