The reliance of the world economy on the US dollar was questioned by Russia’s foreign minister on Wednesday.
Sergey Lavrov said in a speech while on a visit to Ethiopia that the reliance on the American dollar to support the global economy was “not so very promising” and that nations were turning to alternative currencies “more and more.”
At a news conference in Addis Ababa, Russia’s senior ambassador declared that “this process will be gaining momentum.”
Lavrov said that people would have to decide what kind of society they wanted to live in as the world was going through an “important historical period.”
He stated, “A universe, which is based on the United Nations charter, which says that the United Nations is founded on the principle of sovereign equality of states, or we will have the world where the right of force, the right of the strongest dominates.”
Lavrov met with the president of Ethiopia, Sahle-Work Zewde, and the foreign minister, Demeke Mekonnen when he was in Addis Ababa.
Lavrov is attempting to persuade African leaders and, to a much lesser extent, the general public that neither the fighting nor the food problem can be attributed to Moscow.
The embargo is being attributed to Ukrainian mines by Russia.
