On Wednesday night, Mohamed Salah stole the show as Liverpool ran wild at Ibrox. He responded to his detractors in dramatic style on by scoring a breathtaking hat-trick as Liverpool routed Rangers 7-1. His quick-fire trio of goals, which took just over six minutes after he came off the bench, were the quickest in Champions League history.

With that, he broke Bafetimbi Gomis’ record for the fastest hat-trick in Europe’s top division, which he had previously held against Dinamo Zagreb in 2011 during Lyon’s 7-1 victory. He scored an eight-minute hat-trick.

The competition has seen 11-minute hat-tricks from players like Cristiano Ronaldo, Robert Lewandowski, and Raheem Sterling, but none have accomplished it as quickly as Salah.

Salah, who wasn’t included in the starting lineup, single-handedly increased the score from 3-1 to 6-1 in a matter of minutes. He did this by first prodding the ball home from an angle, then stopping the ball to beat two defenders before putting it in the net, and finally sweeping home a trademark finish from the edge of the box. All three goals were assisted by the same player, Diogo Jota – the first time that’s happened since 2012.

With two games left, Liverpool is in second place in Group A with 9 points. Napoli is in first place with 12 points and overcame Ajax 4-2 earlier on Wednesday to advance to the round of 16.
