Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan has announced a $172 million investment to build a cutting-edge indoor arena in Dar es Salaam. The facility aims to rival Rwanda’s Kigali Arena and position Tanzania as a premier hub for international sporting and entertainment events.
Speaking at a high-profile event in Dar es Salaam, President Samia highlighted the importance of modern infrastructure in driving economic growth and fostering national pride. “This arena will not only be a center for sports and entertainment but also a key driver of economic development. It will attract international competitions, create jobs, and boost our tourism sector,” she stated.
The proposed arena will feature world-class amenities, including a multi-purpose court, seating for over 20,000 spectators, VIP suites, and advanced audio-visual technology. Designed with sustainability in mind, it will incorporate energy-efficient systems to minimize environmental impact. The project is part of the president’s broader vision to modernize Tanzania’s infrastructure and enhance its competitiveness on the global stage.

Once completed, the facility will host a diverse range of events, including basketball and volleyball tournaments, concerts, conferences, and exhibitions. This strategic move is expected to draw major international events and performances, boosting Tanzania’s reputation as an entertainment and sports hub.
The announcement has been met with enthusiasm from various stakeholders, including sports federations, event organizers, and business leaders. The Tanzania Basketball Federation (TBF) expressed excitement about the potential impact on the sport. “This arena will provide our athletes with a top-tier platform to compete at the highest level. It will also serve as an inspiration for young talents across the country,” said TBF President Musa Mziya.
The arena’s construction is projected to generate thousands of jobs, both during the building phase and after its completion. Additionally, local businesses, including hotels, restaurants, and transport services, are expected to benefit from the influx of visitors attending events. The government sees the project as a vital step toward fostering economic growth and improving Tanzanians’ livelihoods. Dar es Salaam’s status as a major economic hub further strengthens the arena’s appeal, ensuring accessibility to both local and international audiences.

Beyond sports, the decision to invest in a modern arena comes amid growing pressure from Tanzania’s entertainment industry. Popular musician Diamond Platnumz and other artists have been vocal about the lack of proper concert venues in the region. The issue gained attention after the Trace Music Summit and Awards in Zanzibar, where a collapsing concert stage embarrassed the hosts in front of high-profile guests. Diamond Platnumz has since urged East African governments to invest in quality venues to support the region’s creative industries.
President Samia’s commitment to building a $172 million indoor arena represents a major step forward for Tanzania’s sports and entertainment sectors. The project is set to drive economic growth, create employment opportunities, and elevate the country’s status as a premier destination for international events.
