Sadio Mane sealed a historic Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title for Senegal 🇸🇳 as he slotted in the crucial spot kick to defeat Egypt 🇪🇬 4-2 on penalties in a tense shootout as the tournament came to an end in Olembe Stadium in Cameroon.
Drama ensued as Senegal were awarded a penalty only four minutes into the game. A thunderbolt strike from Sadio Mane was saved by Gabaski who continued his stellar form from the semifinals.
Despite the disappointment Senegal were still able to take control of the match. Ismaila Sarr, Famara Diedgiou and Mane were linking up well in attack but couldn’t convert.
Egypt couldn’t register a single shot in the opening 30 minutes as they struggled to move out of their own half.
After the break momentum continued in Senegal’s favor with Idrissa Gueye and Diedgiou causing threats but Gabaski came up big again on multiple occasions. Egypt brought in Trezeguet, Marwan Hamdi and Ahmed Sayed to add some firepower but none of the substitutes could have any major impact.
Nobody could find a way a way past Mendy and Gabaski and the match went to a penalty shootout. A tense shootout saw three misses, including two for Egypt. That handed the chance for Mane to make history for his country and he made no mistake, lashing the ball into the bottom-left corner to break Egyptian hearts.
A goal that will be etched in the history books for #TeamSenegal
