A Turkish Airlines flight from Seattle to Istanbul faced a tragic and unexpected event when the pilot collapsed and died mid-flight, necessitating an emergency landing. The incident occurred on flight TK204, an Airbus 350, which had departed from Seattle on Tuesday evening. The pilot, identified as 59-year-old İlcehin Pehlivan, had been with Turkish Airlines since 2007 and had recently passed a medical examination in March, showing no signs of health issues.

As the flight progressed, Pehlivan suddenly collapsed, prompting immediate first aid efforts by the flight crew. Despite their best attempts, they were unable to revive him. Recognizing the severity of the situation, the co-pilot and another pilot on board decided to divert the flight to the nearest suitable airport, which was John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York. The emergency landing was executed smoothly, ensuring the safety of all passengers and crew on board.

The flight tracking data from FlightAware indicated that the plane was flying over northern Canada when the decision was made to divert south towards New York. The aircraft landed at JFK at approximately 5:57 a.m. on Wednesday. Passengers were understandably shaken by the incident but were safely disembarked and arrangements were made for their onward travel to Istanbul.

Turkish Airlines spokesperson Yahya Ustun expressed deep sorrow over the loss of Captain Pehlivan. In a statement, he conveyed the airline’s condolences to Pehlivan’s family, colleagues, and loved ones. Ustun highlighted that Pehlivan had undergone a routine health check in March and had been cleared by the General Directorate of Civil Aviation, with no indications of any health problems.

The sudden death of Captain Pehlivan has raised questions about the health and safety protocols for pilots. While pilots undergo regular medical examinations to ensure they are fit to fly, this incident shows the importance of continuous monitoring and the need for robust emergency response procedures. The aviation industry is known for its stringent safety standards, and incidents like this are rare, but they do indicate the unpredictable nature of health issues.

Passengers on the diverted flight praised the professionalism and composure of the flight crew during the emergency. One passenger recounted how the crew kept everyone informed and calm throughout the ordeal, ensuring that the emergency landing was handled with the utmost care and efficiency. The airline has since arranged for the passengers to continue their journey to Istanbul on another flight.

This tragic event has also brought attention to the emotional and psychological toll on the flight crew, who had to manage the situation while dealing with the loss of a colleague. Turkish Airlines has offered support and counseling services to the crew members affected by the incident.

This incident serves as a somber reminder of the critical role that pilots play in ensuring the safety of air travel and the importance of comprehensive health monitoring and emergency preparedness in the aviation industry.
