South African music sensation Tyla has achieved a historic milestone by surpassing Beyonce on Spotify. At just 22 years old, Tyla has broken the record for the most streamed album by a black female artist released in 2024.
Her self-titled debut album amassed an impressive 1.565 billion streams, edging out Beyonce’s Cowboy Carter, which garnered 1.564 billion streams.
This remarkable achievement also crowns Tyla as the creator of the most streamed album ever by a female African artist on Spotify. The album’s hit single Water has become a global phenomenon, accumulating nearly a billion streams on the platform.
This viral success earned Tyla a Grammy in the newly introduced Best African Music Performance category during the 66th Grammy Awards. Despite this, her album and its deluxe version were not included in the 67th Grammy nominations.
Tyla, often hailed as a pioneer in African music, has dominated 2024 with numerous awards. Her accolades include one Grammy, three MTV EMAs, two BET Awards, one MTV VMA, and the Billboard Global Force Award.
In her home country, she has received four South African Music Awards, one DStv Content Creator Award, and two Basadi in Music Awards, among others.
