Ugandan athlete Rebecca Cheptegei, known for her resilience on the marathon track, has tragically succumbed to severe burns inflicted in a horrifying act of domestic violence.

Cheptegei, who represented Uganda at the Paris Olympic Games, died at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) in Eldoret after enduring burns on 80 percent of her body, injuries inflicted by her boyfriend in a brutal attack.

The incident unfolded on a seemingly ordinary Sunday when Cheptegei, returning from church with her children, was ambushed by her boyfriend, Marangach, who had sneaked into her home with a five-litre jerrican of petrol.

In a chilling act of rage, he allegedly doused her in petrol and set her ablaze. The desperate cries of Cheptegei echoed through the neighborhood, prompting neighbors to rush in, managing to rescue both her and Marangach, who had also suffered burns in the fray. They were quickly transported to the hospital in critical condition.

Despite the tireless efforts of medical staff at MTRH, who worked relentlessly to stabilize her, Cheptegei’s condition rapidly declined. She was scheduled for an emergency airlift to Nairobi for specialized treatment on Friday, but her health deteriorated beyond recovery. “Unfortunately, we lost her after all her organs failed last night,” confirmed MTRH acting Director Dr. Owen Menach.

Cheptegei’s death has sent shockwaves through the community, igniting a fierce conversation about domestic violence in Uganda and beyond. The promising marathon runner had not only been a national hero on the athletic field, inspiring countless Ugandans with her strength and determination but also a mother and a role model whose life was brutally cut short. Her tragic end has left family, friends, fans, and fellow athletes reeling with grief and anger.

Authorities have launched an investigation into the assault, with Marangach still under medical care for his injuries. He is expected to face serious charges once he is discharged. This horrific incident has amplified the growing call to end domestic violence, a pressing issue in Uganda and Kenya, where such cases have seen a disturbing rise in recent years.

Rebecca Cheptegei’s death is not just a loss of an athlete but a call to action against the silent epidemic of domestic violence. It is a stark reminder that no one should suffer or lose their life at the hands of someone they love. Her passing should fuel a movement for justice, support for survivors, and systemic changes to prevent future tragedies.
