Kampala, Uganda- Rebecca Cheptegei, a prominent Ugandan marathon runner who recently competed in the 2024 Paris Olympics, is in critical condition following a brutal domestic assault that left her with severe burns. The incident occurred in Trans Nzoia County, Kenya, where Cheptegei was allegedly set on fire by her partner, Dickson Ndiema Marangach, during a domestic dispute.

The attack took place on Sunday, September 2, when Marangach reportedly entered Cheptegei’s home while she and her children were at church. Upon her return, an altercation ensued, during which Marangach allegedly poured petrol on Cheptegei and set her alight. The flames engulfed both Cheptegei and Marangach, leading to severe burns for both individuals.

Neighbors, alerted by Cheptegei’s screams, intervened to extinguish the fire and rushed the couple to the Kitale Level Four Hospital. They were later transferred to Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret for specialized treatment.
