Kingston, Jamaica– A remarkable feat occurred at the 51st Carifta Games in Grenada, where 16-year-old Jamaican sprinter Nickecoy Bramwell broke Usain Bolt’s long-standing under-17 400m record. Bramwell clocked an impressive time of 47.26 seconds, surpassing Bolt’s previous record of 47.33 seconds set in 2002 by 0.07 seconds.
Bramwell’s victory was particularly noteworthy as he overcame recent injury challenges, including hamstring issues, to secure gold in the event. His performance showcased not only his speed but also his determination, as he had been eyeing this record since the previous summer. “It’s a wonderful feeling to break the record… I just took my mind off it and focused on the record,” Bramwell stated after his race.
The young athlete’s achievement has drawn comparisons to Bolt, who remains a towering figure in sprinting despite retiring in 2017. Bolt expressed his excitement about the new generation of athletes, stating, “I think young athletes are coming up and I see a few personalities that are needed in sport“. Bramwell’s personal bests in shorter distances, including 10.94 seconds in the 100m and 21.45 seconds in the 200m, indicate his potential to continue making waves in athletics.
As Bramwell steps into the spotlight, he carries the hopes of a nation renowned for producing elite sprinters. His record-breaking run not only highlights his talent but also signifies the ongoing legacy of Jamaican sprinting excellence, as he aims to follow in the footsteps of legends like Bolt.
