Will Smith has officially handed in his resignation to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences after slapping Chris Rock at the Oscars.

The saga which has been a trending topic since it happened, outshined all other events that took place at the Oscars. Will highlighted this in his resignation adding that revealed that he would like to put the spotlight back on the nominees and the winners.

“I betrayed the trust of the Academy. I deprived other nominees and winners of their opportunity to celebrate and be celebrated for their extraordinary work. I am heartbroken,” he said. 

The Academy’s President David Rubin confirmed that they received Will’s resignation but will still move forward with determining which disciplinary measure is best for Will during despite his exit.

Will who apologized to Rock via his Instagram account, deemed his actions as ‘painful and inexcusable’ in his resignation letter. He also added that he will fully accept the consequences following his actions.

“I want to put the focus back on those who deserve attention for their achievements and allow the Academy to get back to the incredible work it does to support creativity and artistry in film.”

So, I am resigning from membership in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, and will accept any further consequences the board deems appropriate,” he added.

Will finished off by adding that he is working on ensuring that he will never let violence overtake reason and that change takes time.
