Rebecca Ziba, a student from Zambia has been arrested in Russia for twerking on a war memorial site and is now facing three years imprisonment.

Ziba was arrested over ‘rehabilitating Nazism’ for twerking next to a World War II memorial in Khanty-Mansiysk after a video that she posted was picked up by detectives who described her act as ‘insulting’ and ‘obscene’.

She posted her twerking video on Instagram along with a caption that read ‘Twerking for the dead, I’m sure they are sleeping well’.

The 21-year-old is now facing up to three years in prison and a fine of $37,359 if she is found guilty of “desecrating a symbol of Russian military glory”.

The Russian Investigative Committee has since posted a video of a remorseful Ziba who appears to be sitting in an interrogation room. She revealed that she did not know the significance of the memorial site.

“I didn’t want the video I posted to be offensive and disrespectful to the dead. I didn’t know what the memorial signifies. I apologise very much to everyone,” said Ziba.
