Harare, Zimbabwe- Zimbabwe is grappling with extended power cuts following a technical fault at the Hwange Thermal Power Station, significantly impacting electricity generation across the nation. The Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority (ZESA) announced that a malfunction in Unit 8, which has a capacity of 300 MW, has led to a substantial shortfall in the national grid’s electricity supply.

In a statement released on Saturday evening, ZESA informed its customers of the reduced electricity generation capacity due to the technical challenge at Hwange. As a result, the utility has been forced to implement increased load-shedding schedules to balance the supply and demand of electricity.

The Zimbabwe Power Company, ZESA’s power generation subsidiary, reported that the Hwange Thermal Power Station is currently producing only 635 MW of electricity, a significant drop from the more than 1,000 MW it was generating previously. This reduction highlights the ongoing struggles within Zimbabwe’s electricity sector, which is plagued by aging infrastructure, insufficient investment, and drought-induced low water levels at hydroelectric dams.

The prolonged power cuts are expected to have severe repercussions for businesses and households across Zimbabwe, disrupting daily life and hindering economic activities. Despite the challenges, ZESA’s technical teams are working diligently to resolve the fault and minimize the impact on customers.
