Top-flight football in Zimbabwe has been suspended until further notice following a wave of violence, pitch invasions, and vandalism at a game between Highlanders and Dynamos during a heated game on Sunday, May 15. The match between Highlanders and Dynamos dubbed the biggest fixture in Zimbabwe, had to be abandoned following unfortunate scenes.

The incidences of violence at Barbourfields Stadium was after Dynamos players and fans staged a pitch protest over the hosts’ injury time goal.  Dynamos fans reportedly invaded the pitch and went on to uproot the goalposts and tore the nets. The match ended up being suspended due to the uproar. This then transcended into full-blown violence.

This move has angered the fans who branded PSL’s decision as nonsense arguing that the board should have put the involved teams, Highlanders and Dynamos to the sword and made them pay not the whole football fraternity.

Football’s world governing body also suspended Zimbabwe in February for government interference in running the game in the country.

The Warriors are excluded from qualifiers for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations unless they get that sanction lifted two weeks before their first group fixture, which is against Liberia on 9 June.
