Jamaican artiste Tommy Lee Sparta has been released back to jail after taking time in hospital where he was admitted on Monday following an altercation between him and a correctional officer.

It all began on Monday morning when the correctional officer asked Sparta to return to his cell after having breakfast and Sparta was not having any of that. He then hurled his breakfast at the officer who together with other officers retaliated.

“He was subdued by the officer and both parties received injuries,” a statement from the Department of Correctional Services read.

Adding, “The inmate was taken to the medical orderly on the compound of the institution for examination and was later transferred to a public hospital for further treatment.”

The dancehall artiste was taken to the Kingston Public Hospital on Tuesday where he received further treatment for the injuries he had sustained.

According to Zavia Mayne, Minister of State in the Ministry of National Security, the officers were justified to reasonably restrain Sparta adding that investigations are currently ongoing but there are no grounds to dismiss the officers who were involved.

Sparta was sentenced to three years in jail back in March 2021 after he was found in possession of an illegal firearm on his waistband after being searched by the police.
