Argentine international defender Lisandro Martinez is set to become Manchester United’s third signing of the transfer window after the English giants agreed a deal with Ajax on Sunday. Martinez’s deal wasn’t easy as Manchester United had to fight off Arsenal in the race to sign him.
Martinez has been in Manchester over the weekend for his medical and will join up with his new teammates when they return from their pre-season tour of Thailand and Australia next week. Martinez becomes United’s third signing of the summer after Tyrell Malacia and Christian Eriksen.
Martinez is primarily a central defender but is prized for his versatility, able to play at left-back and at the base of midfield. After moving from South America in 2019, he joined Ajax and played under new united manager Erik ten Hag, winning two Eredivisie titles and the Dutch Cup during his three-year stay in Amsterdam.
Ajax were initially reluctant to lose their player of the year from last season’s Eredivise-winning campaign but Martinez was keen to reunite with Ten Hag.
The Red Devils have struggled a lot in defense and midfield in recent times, most of which were down to poor signings and management. However, having secured Martinez and Eriksen, United supporters can feel optimistic about the future.
