It was a fight between prisoners. I don’t know who assaulted Joran,” Altez said, declining to provide any further details on his client’s condition.

Van der Sloot is currently serving a 28-year prison sentence in Peru for the murder of 21-year-old Stephany Flores in 2010. In relation to promises he allegedly made to Holloway’s family regarding leading authorities to her body, he is awaiting temporary extradition to the United States to face American charges of extortion and wire fraud.

An Alabama judge declared Holloway dead in 2012, more than six years after she disappeared.

Gustavo Meza-Cuadra, Peru’s ambassador to the U.S., hopes Van der Sloot’s temporary extradition to the United States will“enable a process that will bring peace to Mrs. Holloway and her family, who are grieving the same way that the Flores family in Peru is grieving for the death of their daughter, Stephany.”
