Nigerian chess master, Tunde Onakoya (pictured), has launched his bid to break the Guinness World Record for the longest chess marathon.
Starting today, April 17, at 10 am in New York City’s Times Square, Onakoya plans to play chess continuously for 58 hours until April 19 at 8 pm, aiming to surpass the current record of 56 hours, 9 minutes, and 37 seconds set by Norwegians Hallvard Haug Flatebø and Sjur Ferkingstad in 2018.
Onakoya’s motivation transcends personal glory; he’s driven by the dreams of millions of underprivileged African children lacking access to education. Through his initiative, Chess in Slums Africa, he empowers marginalized youth, providing them with opportunities through chess.
Expressing his determination, Onakoya shared on social media: “On the 17th of April 2024, I will attempt to break the Guinness World record for the longest Chess marathon in the heart of Times Square New York City for 58 hours without losing a game,” highlighting his commitment to championing education for disadvantaged African children.
His journey is deeply rooted in empathy, as he vividly recalls the hardships of his own childhood. Speaking on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief, Onakoya reflected on the pain of hunger and the deprivation of access to education, underscoring the true tragedy of poverty.
His experience fuels his passion to make a difference, driving him to provide the support he once longed for.
Onakoya’s plea extends beyond the chessboard; he calls upon Nigerians residing in New York to rally behind him in this endeavor. The attempt was scheduled to kick off at 10 am local time and will be live-streamed on YouTube, inviting supporters worldwide to witness his quest for the record.
With his initiative, Onakoya embodies resilience and compassion, striving to be the beacon of hope for children facing similar adversities. As he embarks on this historic endeavor, he not only seeks to etch his name in the annals of chess history but also to pave the way for a brighter future for generations to come.
In the heart of Times Square, amidst the bustling streets of New York City, Tunde Onakoya stands as a testament to the power of determination, inspiring individuals worldwide to believe in the transformative potential of education and the indomitable human spirit.
