Pop singer Shakira will soon be heading to court after a judge in Spain gave a nod for the song bird’s trial on charges of tax fraud.
The ‘Hips Don’t Lie’ singer is being accused of failing to pay taxes in her hometown amounting to $13.9 million between 2012 and 2014. According to prosecutors, Shakira spent a good amount of time in Barcelona as opposed to Miami, where she also resides.
If found guilty of the mentioned charges, prosecutors are hoping to get an 8-year jail sentence and a hefty fine for the entertainer.
Shakira on the other hand is confident that she is innocent and has denied evading the taxes. She revealed that she paid up all that she owed even before receiving the lawsuit back in 2018. She mentions topping up $2.8 million in interest.
Her camp also insists that she is a good law-abiding citizen and that the Tax office is presenting an unjust and baseless case.
“Due to these unjust accusations, she has decided to pursue this matter in court. Shakira is confident that her innocence will be proven by the end of the judicial process and is grateful for the support she’s received,” her camp said.
Shakira whose trial date is yet to be disclosed, will be facing up to six counts of tax fraud.
