Kiernan Jarryd Forbes, better known as AKA has been laid to rest in a private ceremony on Friday afternoon at the Westpark Cemetery in Johannesburg.
The 35-year-old rapper was shot dead on February 10 outside of a restaurant in Durban. The South African police believe that AKA’s death was not an accident and was carried out by a paid hitman.
CCTV footage of the incident shows a gunman walking up to AKA where he fired two shots that hit the rapper’s head. Celebrity chef and AKA’s longtime friend, Tebello “Tibz” Motsoane was also killed during the shooting.
Among those who were present at the funeral included his family, daughter Kairo Forbes, Somizi Mhlongo, DJ Oskido as well as musician Ihashi Elimhlophe. His girlfriend Nadia Nakai, was also present and gave him a tearful tribute on her Instagram, where she revealed that she is shattered.
“There is no pain bigger than the pain of losing you. I thought I was going to spend the rest of my life with you, I realize you’re the one who spent the rest of your life with me. I don’t know why things happen the way they do, but I’m questioning God right now,” she said.
“Why would he bring us together to only take you away. I just don’t understand. I don’t know how I’m going to do this, going on with my life without you, I just can’t.”
