About eight people have been reported dead, with dozens hurt in a crush outside an Africa Cup of Nations match in Cameroon.
According to reports, around 50,000 people were set to watch Cameroon last 16 Africa Cup of Nations match against Comoros at the Olembe Stadium.
The 60000 seater ground was not meant to be more than 80% capacity due to covid. The local hospital reported at least 40 injured as well as at least six deaths
Naseri Paul Biya, Governor of the central region of Cameroon, said there could be more casualties.
Witnesses said it happened when stadium stewards closed the gates and stopped allowing people in.
The Confederation of African Football (CAF), which runs the African Cup, said in a statement it was aware of the incident.
“CAF is currently investigating the situation and trying to get more details on what transpired. We are in constant communication with Cameroon government and the local organizing committee.”
