Disney+ has joined forces with pan-African studio Kugali Media to create an animated series set in futuristic Lagos, Nigeria, titled “Iwájú.” Premiering globally on February 28, this innovative six-episode limited series introduces characters Tola and Kole as they navigate a society divided under the rule of gang leader Bode.

Simisola Gbadamosi lends her voice to Tola, a young girl from the wealthy island, while Siji Soetan voices her best friend Kole, a self-taught tech expert. Together, they embark on a journey through a neo-futuristic Lagos, unraveling the complexities of greed and corruption against the backdrop of speculative fiction and rich African cultural elements.

Iwájú” explores themes of class dynamics and defiance, making it more than just an animated series; it’s a thought-provoking narrative that delves into global issues. The storytelling invites viewers to contemplate societal structures and the resilience of the human spirit in the face of adversity.

Complementing the series, a mobile game titled “Disney: Iwájú Rising Chef” will be available on Android and iOS platforms, providing an interactive extension into the Iwájú universe. This adds a new dimension for fans to engage with the characters and storyline.

The voice cast, including talents like Femi Branch, Dayo Okeniyi, and Weruche Opia, adds authenticity and depth to the characters, bringing the animated world to life with their performances.

In addition to the visual experience, the soundtrack, releasing on March 1st, features African-influenced music composed by Ré Olunuga. His deep connection to Lagos is evident in the score, providing a sonic backdrop that mirrors the city’s multiplicity and layers.

Ré Olunuga expressed, “I rarely bring my own emotions into writing a score. In this case, it couldn’t be avoided.” The soundtrack becomes a reflection of the composer’s profound love for Lagos and its intricate cultural tapestry.

Ultimately, Disney+’s collaboration with Kugali Media for “Iwájú” transcends animation. It is a cultural celebration, a futuristic exploration, and a testament to the power of storytelling.

As the series and game prepare to captivate audiences globally, they open doors to conversations about the future, culture, and the limitless possibilities of storytelling in the digital age.
