SOUTH AFRICA AND MOROCCO QUALIFY FOR WAFCON FINALS

Banyana Banyana of South Africa qualified for the final of the WAFCON 2022 after securing a dramatic 1-0 win against the Copper Queens of Zambia in Monday’s night semi-final.

After six minutes of added time, the South Africans were awarded a penalty for a foul on a Banyana Banyana player after lengthy consultation with VAR. Linda Motlaho calmly slotted home the penalty with a right-footed strike that entered the bottom left corner and went beyond Mushonda’s reach, ensuring Banyana’s fifth Women’s Afcon final appearance.

Nigeria, a three-time African champion, will not compete in the Women’s AFCON 2022 final. The Nigerian women have fallen to Morocco, the host country.

Morocco’s Atlas Lionesses will compete in their first continental final. Following South Africa’s qualification for the Women’s AFCON final, Morocco makes history by defeating the reigning African champions. Moroccan women defeated Nigeria on penalties (5-4) after each team scored one goal in regular time. 

A new African champion will emerge after three editions-all won by super falcons when Morocco face South Africa in the final of July 23rd.The third play-off match between Nigeria and Zambia will be held on July 22nd at the Stade Mohammed V in Casablanca.
