Uganda’s Robert Kyagulanyi, widely known as Bobi Wine, is celebrating as his documentary, ‘Bobi Wine: The People’s President,’ has secured a nomination at the 2024 Oscars in the Best Documentary Feature Film category.

The film, capturing the Ugandan story, stands alongside four other documentaries, including the Tunisian production ‘Four Daughters.’

Expressing his gratitude, Bobi Wine remarked, “It is such a humbling moment to see the Ugandan story make it to the Academy Awards – the most prestigious and significant awards in the world.”

He sees this recognition as a continuation of the fight for democracy in Uganda and globally, thanking everyone for acknowledging it.

Bobi Wine, who faced defeat against President Museveni in the 2021 elections, witnessed allegations of manipulated votes triggering widespread protests by opposition supporters. During this period, human rights groups reported security forces causing casualties and detaining numerous protestors.

Known for his vocal criticism of President Museveni’s rule, Bobi Wine has faced multiple arrests and detentions. Notably, on Tuesday, security forces lifted a five-day blockade at his home, marking a development in the ongoing political landscape.
