Ex- Lesotho Prime Minister  Thomas Thabane and his current wife, Maesaiah Thabane, have been charged with murder.

Thomas Thabane, 82,  was charged on Tuesday together with his current wife Maesaiah 43, for allegedly murdering his late wife, Lipolela Thabane.

The charges were read out to the couple at a preliminary unclosed court interview in the High Court of Lesotho. However, the couple has refused having a hand in the matter.

Lipolela Thabane was shot dead near her home in Maseru, days prior to the swearing-in of Thomas Thabane as the country’s Prime Minister.

It is reported that the couple was going through a difficult divorce during the period that led to Lipolela’s demise.

Police allegedly say Maesaiah contracted eight assassins to murder the former prime minister’s wife but was absent from the scene during the shoot out.

Meanwhile, Thomas and Maesaiah Thabane – who married almost immediately after the murder occurred, have also been charged for the attempted murder of Thato Sibolla who was with Lipolelo at the time of the incident.

Sibella was allegedly shot at, with her car viciously damaged as a result of the shoot out.

The court has scheduled the hearing for the murder case between March 8 and 10 next year.

Thabane resigned as prime minister of Lesotho in May last year following pressure from his party and other opposition stakeholders.
