Franck Kessie has joined Barcelona on a free transfer after leaving AC Milan. The Ivory Coast midfielder will be officially introduced on Wednesday. He will be the second Ivorian to play for Barcelona, after Yaya Touré in the late 2000s.
Kessie built up a reputation as one of the top midfielders in Italy over the last three years, taking his game to the next level after a permanent move to Milan from Atalanta in 2019.
Speculation over the 25-year-old’s future had been raging as he approached the final few months of his contract at San Siro, and Barca have now won the race for his signature. Given their financial difficulties, Barcelona have had to sell to buy, or rely on free transfers, to make additions to their squad. Barcelona called Kessie “the complete package” and a “strong midfielder with tactical awareness.”
The 25-year-old amassed more than 200 top-flight appearances in Italy, scoring 41 goals including six league strikes during Milan’s title run last term. Manchester United are reportedly still chasing De Jong but also look set to sign free agent Christian Eriksen.
