Following Venezuela’s lifting of the diplomat’s diplomatic immunity, he was put on trial for the murder. According to reports by news agencies, the court determined that Mr. Sagaray was in charge of the mission before Ms. Fonseca’s entrance and was enraged by her presence because he wanted to keep running the embassy.

Less than two weeks after beginning her new position in Nairobi on July 15, Ms. Fonseca, 57, was murdered.
