Kenya’s interior Cabinet Secretary (CS) Fred Matiang’i has enforced an immediate dusk to dawn curfew in parts of Garissa County over security concerns.

The areas affected by the 30-day curfew are Garissa central, Waberi East, Waberi West, and Iftin locations.

“Incidents of criminal attacks fueled by conflicts over land and other resources have been reported in parts of Garissa. This has triggered retaliatory attacks, loss of life, destruction of property, and created tensions in the affected areas,” said Matiang’i in a statement Wednesday.

In an attempt to curb the land disputes, the CS has ordered the suspension of issuance of title deeds, adjudications and land surveys until further notice.

Matiang’i is also planning to recruit and deploy chiefs to Tawakal and Bulla Mzuri locations among also meeting with elected leaders to deliberate on peace initiatives. Police have nabbed 20 criminal suspects who are currently in custody awaiting trial.
