Manchester City’s Erling Haaland became the first player in Premier League history to score three consecutive home hat-tricks as Manchester City decimated Manchester United 6-3 at the Etihad Stadium..

Haaland’s blistering start to the season continued, with 17 goals in 10 games since joining from Borussia Dortmund, while Phil Foden scored his first treble for City. This was a harsh reality check for United following their recent progress, as the reigning Premier League champions ran riot to demonstrate the disparity in class between the teams.

After only eight minutes, Foden flicked home Bernardo Silva’s cross, before Haaland inevitably joined the action with a header from a corner 11 minutes before half-time. As United began to wilt, Haaland slid in a goal from a brilliant ball from Kevin de Bruyne, then turned provider to set up a simple finish for Foden before the break.

United’s new acquisition Antony responded with a wonderful goal from 25 yards, but it only prompted City to pick up the pace again, with Haaland smashing home his third from Sergio Gomez’s cross and then demonstrating his ability as a creator by setting up Foden for City’s sixth.

Anthony Martial’s late goal for United, as well as his added-time penalty, were met with virtual silence on a day of disgrace for the visitors. Ten Hag and United’s performance is disappointing given their recent optimism: they drop to sixth place, as City pulls within one point of first-place Arsenal.
