Musical sensation Shakira and her long-time footballer boyfriend Gerard Pique announced on Saturday in a joint statement that they have decided to go their separate ways after 12 years of being together.
The pair share two children: Sasha,7 and Milan,9. They met on the set for Shakira’s music video ‘Waka Waka’ which served as the official FIFA World Cup song in 2010.
They later on confirmed their relationship in March 2011 when Shakira posted a lovey dovey picture of them on Facebook at the beach with the caption ‘Les presento a mi sol. Shak’ which is Spanish for ‘I present to you my sunshine’.
The couple made it clear in their joint statement that their number one priority is their two sons and even went ahead to the public to give them privacy during this difficult moment.
“We regret to confirm that we are separating,” the couple said in a joint statement Saturday.
“We ask for privacy at this moment for the well-being of our children, who are our maximum priority. Thank you in advance for your understanding and respect,” read the statement.
The devastating news has come after rumors circulated that Pique has been living separately in Barcelona home, away from his family.
