At least 13 gendarmes were murdered in an ambush on Sunday in Taparko, a mining town in northern Burkina Faso that is frequently targeted by Islamist fighters, according to security sources.
A number of other gendarmes were also missing, according to the source, in addition to the 13 confirmed deceased.
Another security source indicated that reinforcements had been called in and that they were searching the sector for eight gendarmes who had gone missing.
Eight more gendarmes were injured in the incident, two of which were critically injured, and they were flown to Tougourifor treatment.
Two persons were murdered and numerous others injured when a bus collided with a landmine on Sunday, also near Taparko.
