Bandits in Nigeria’s Niger state have shot dead about 16 worshippers in a mosque.
An unknown number has also sustained injuries from the attack in Ba’are village.
During early morning prayers on Wednesday, the gunmen opened fire on the Muslim worshippers, the Niger state government official Ahmed Ibrahim Matane said to media outlets.
He added that the motorbike-riding gunmen also shot and killed one other person on the road as they ran off.
Following the killings, residents have deserted the remote community.
Separately in neighbouring Katsina state, a group of gunmen have also shot dead a senior government official at his home.
According to the police, they are probing the murder of Rabe Nasir, the state commissioner of science and technology.
In recent days, the region has been grappling with a wave of kidnappings for ransom and killings by armed criminal gangs.
Earlier in the week, some 23 travellers were ambushed by gunmen and burnt to death inside a bus in Sokoto state.
