In Somaliland, a murderer’s life was saved thanks to a last-minute agreement to pay 100 camels as restitution.

The unnamed guy was one of five prisoners scheduled for execution on Tuesday in the Madheera region, northeast of Hargeisa, the self-declared republic’s capital.

Elders from the killer’s and victim’s families arrived at the execution location just before the firing squad received its instructions, and they freed the murderer from a pole.

The other four, who had been executed after being convicted on distinct murder counts, were shot. In Somaliland, interventions at execution locations at the last minute are typical.

Although 100 camels are the customary punishment for a man’s murder, money is sometimes substituted due to a recent reduction in the population of highly esteemed animals.

A formal judicial procedure coexists with this parallel system, which occasionally completes or augments it. The criticism stems from the fact that it allows those from wealthy backgrounds to purchase their freedom while denying it to others from lower socioeconomic backgrounds.
