DOMINICA- In an effort to aid the island’s indigenous community, the Kalinago tribe, the Commonwealth of Dominica is planning a series of workshops.

The main focus of the workshop will be providing access to climate financing to build more resilient communities. These workshops will be conducted by Dominica’s government in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme(UNDP) via EnGenDER.

Conzier Fredrick, Minister of Environment, Rural Modernisation, and Minister of Kalinago Affairs, explained that the area is at the frontline of climate change and that it must be addressed as soon as possible.

He added that although everyone might not be responsible for producing emissions, it still affects everyone. Hence, everyone should be involved in the process of improving the condition.

“So participating in the movement for the first climate-resilient country is significant for the community,” he said.

Last week, the minister for Kalinago upliftment announced that the government had adopted a project to improve knowledge and awareness about climate change and disaster risk management.

A project aimed at building climate change resilience and disaster risk adaptation capacity commenced officially on February 2, Wednesday, in the Kalinago Territory, and should be completed in October 2023.

The Kalinago tribe is one of the oldest indigenous tribes of Dominica and the Caribbean. They are also known as the Caribs. They are descendants of the Arawak people, who were originally from South America.

The Kalinago tribe has a long history of resistance against European colonial powers. They were able to maintain their independence until 1697 when they surrendered to French colonial forces after resisting for over 20 years.

They have a rich culture and history spanning more than 3,000 years that has been passed down from generation to generation. They have a strong connection to the land and their ancestors.

The Kalinagos are well known in Dominica for their handmade crafts, such as basket weaving and calabash plant decorations.

Unfortunately, their population has been shrinking over time due to disease and other factors. In recent years, they have been able to reclaim some of their land which is now protected by law.
