• Commemorating the 20th anniversary of the AFRICAN UNION (AU).

CAPE TOWN, South Africa, July 8, 2022/ —

CONTINENTAL leaders will today announce and launch the African Union’s Economic, Social and Cultural Council (ECOSOCC) Pan-African Month.

The event is geared specifically for the African Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) and the African Citizenry to take stock of activities in which they can participate throughout the month of July.

The month of July 2022 will mark 20 years since the Durban Summit, which established the AU, and nearly 70 years since the Organisation of African Unity was founded (OAU).

ECOSOCC will commemorate the 20th anniversary of the African Union by organizing an ECOSOCC Pan-African Month, with core activities revolving around the 41st Ordinary Session of the Executive Council and the 4th AU Mid-Year Coordination Meeting.

ECOSOCC also intends to leverage the AU at 20 celebrations, in particular, to honour and showcase African CSOs for their unwavering participation in issues on the African continent’s political and socioeconomic advancement within their respective regions and countries, as well as to reignite and strengthen the spirit of Pan Africanism among civil society.

The Economic, Social and Cultural Council (ECOSOCC) was established in July 2004 as an Advisory Organ composed of different social and professional groups of AU Member States.

The mandate of ECOSOCC is to contribute, through advice, to the effective translation of the objectives, principles and policies of the African Union into concrete programmes, as well as the evaluation of these programmes.

The event will be virtual and speakers include Ambassador Amr Aljowali, Strategic Adviser to the Deputy Chairperson, African Union Commission; Denise Kodhe, Presiding Officer, ECOSOCC; Prof. Fatima Karadja, Champion of the ECOSOCC Pan-African Month; William Carew, Head of Secretariat, ECOSOCC.
