Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi expressed optimism about the growing collaboration between Egypt and Russia during a foundation-laying ceremony for Egypt’s inaugural nuclear plant, the El Dabaa Nuclear Power Plant

Constructed in partnership with Russia’s Rosatom, the plant is seen as a significant step in bolstering bilateral relations.

El-Sissi emphasized that El Dabaa would strengthen ties and contribute positively to Russian-Egyptian relations. The global energy crisis and supply chain challenges were cited as reasons for Egypt’s decision to revive its peaceful nuclear program

El-Sissi highlighted the importance of nuclear energy in providing safe, cost-effective, and sustainable alternatives, reducing dependence on fossil fuels, and mitigating price fluctuations.

Russian President Vladimir Putin, addressing the ceremony through a video link, underscored Russia’s commitment to modern industries and collaborative efforts.

He described the El Dabaa project as a flagship endeavor reflecting the best traditions of bilateral cooperation. Putin mentioned ongoing communication with El-Sissi, discussing various matters, including the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.

Putin revealed that Russia and Egypt are working together to establish a Russian industrial zone in the Suez Canal area. Additionally, he expressed support for Egypt’s aspiration to become a full member of BRICS, an intergovernmental organization comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates.

During the event, El-Sissi viewed the foundation-laying as a momentous development, marking a “new brilliant page” in the close collaboration between Egypt and the Russian Federation. The partnership extends beyond the El Dabaa project, encompassing economic initiatives and geopolitical coordination.

In the context of regional dynamics, it was noted that Egypt and Qatar are jointly working on a multi-stage proposal to address issues related to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The proposal aims to end the conflict, secure the release of hostages, and present a vision for resolving the broader conflict.
